Data Dictionary Field Help
The Data Dictionary Field Help program allows you to view the file and field definitions (text descriptions of the files and fields in the system and how they are used during processing), for all of the files and fields in the StreamV Database.
The Data Dictionary Field Help program can be activated or called from most of the other programs in the StreamV Application. The Data Dictionary Field Help program can be accessed using the Help Button that is located on the Cove Standard Toolbar, or by selecting the Field Help (form based programs) or the Column Help options (list or browse based programs) that are available from the Context or Right Mouse Menus.
The Data Dictionary Field Help program can be used to display the standard or “Cove Help” information for the files and fields in the StreamV database and it can also be used to display and to maintain “House Help” or customer specific file and field definitions for some or all of the files and fields in the StreamV database.
The Cove Help information that is displayed in the Data Dictionary program is stored in a file called the Data Dictionary file and this file is delivered with the application and updated (overwritten) on a regular basis as system updates are performed.
The House Help information that is displayed in the Data Dictionary program is entered by the end user and this information is stored in the Textdata file (this is a file that is maintained by the site and that is not overwritten when a system update is performed).
The Information that is displayed in the Data Dictionary Field Help program when you activate it is based on the following criteria.
Where the program is called from
• If you are accessing the Data Dictionary Field Help program using the Help Button located on the Cove Standard Toolbar, the system will display the File definition for the primary database file being displayed in the program (for example, if you press the Help Button from the Customer Manager program, the system will display the database definition for the Company or Customer Master file).
• If you are accessing the Data Dictionary program using the Field Help or the Column Help options in the Context menu, the system will display the field definition for the database field that is selected when the program is activated (for example, if you select the Field Help option when the cursor is positioned in the Address1 field of the Customer Manager program, the system will display the database definition for the Address1 field in the Company or Customer Master file). If you select the Column Help option when the cursor is positioned in the PO Number field in the Sales Order Management program, the system will display the field definition for the PO_NO or Purchase Order Number field in the SOHEAD or Sales Order Header file.
Whether or not House Help is present for the selected file or field
• If the file or field that is selected when the Data Dictionary Field Help program is called has only Cove Help (the standard file and field definitions) entered for it, the system will display the Cove Help information for the file or field.
• If House Help information (user or customer defined file and field definitions) has been entered for the file or field selected when the Data Dictionary Field Help program is activated, the system automatically displays the House Help information for the file or field.
• If House Help information has been entered for the file or field selected when the Data Dictionary Field Help program is called, and the operator language is set to something other than the House (system default) language, the system tries to find House Help information for the file or field in the language currently assigned to the operator. If found, the system displays the House Help in the operator language. If House Help in the operator language is not found, the system tries to display the House Help using the House language. If no House Help is found for the file or field in the House Language, the system displays the Cove Help (in English – the default language used by the system).
Viewing the file definition for the primary data file being displayed.
Viewing the field definition for the currently selected field or for any other fields in the primary datafile being displayed.
